On Tuesday 9th October, we completed a school-wide poetry day, celebrating all things poetry and taking part in lots of fun poetry activities within classes.

In Year 4, Mr. Sharrock decided to theme the day around rapping and performance poetry. After being taught about the lyrical genius of rappers like Skee Lo, Mc Hammer and Eminem (all clean lyrics of course!), Mr Sharrock could not resist getting dressed up and having a go himself with a pre-prepared rap to inspire and model the structure to the children.

The children then spent the rest of the morning writing their own raps and performing these with a microphone to a backing track in front of the rest of the class. I was amazed at how quickly the children picked up the rhyming couplet structure and how to pad out or shorten sentences to ensure they stuck to the given beat. We had all sorts of hilarious rhymes, jokes and dances; it was great fun and we had a great time!
