To bring our topic of The Great Plague to life, Year 4 had two very special visitors join them in class last week! A plague doctor and his young apprentice came to Year 4 to explain all about the remedies and ‘cures’ plague doctors from the 1600’s would administer to unfortunate patients. The children compared modern medicine to that of the time as we analysed the effectiveness and safety of the methods, which included drinking mercury, bleeding buboes with leeches and strapping live chickens to their bodies. The children wrote a guide book in the style of Horrible Histories, informing people of the different remedies and adding a comedy twist to express their opinions of how effective and primitive the medical knowledge was.
