As part of Year 4’s ‘Environment’ topic, we have been trying to find ways we can become more sustainable. We found out that 120 BILLION single-use plastic pieces of cutlery are thrown away every year and we decided to do something about it. Taking inspiration from the company Bakeys, we decided to try to make our own edible cutlery using cookie dough, pizza dough and tortilla. The children made their own spoon templates from the three different food types, then we baked them in the school ovens. We predicted the most suitable spoon type from the three food products and considered how we would keep it a fair test. Once the spoon molds were baked, the children tested the three spoons with a bowl of rice crispies and milk. The children closely observed the spoons before eating, after 30 seconds of eating, 1 minute of eating and after 5 minutes of eating. Surprisingly, all three types of edible spoon were very durable, rigid and waterproof in the milk. Even after 5 minutes, all three spoons could be banged on the table and had not gone soggy. The best part of all is that we did not have to wash up – the children evaluated the effectiveness of the spoons then ate all three!
