To enrich this half term’s geography topic of ‘The Environment’, Year 4 have brought their environmental cleanup learning to life by making a campaign to clean up our local town of Kirkham. Armed with litter pickers, the children walked to Kirkham high street, before exploring Kirkham’s park by Morrisons. Along the way, the children picked up all sorts of different kinds of litter from the road, pavements, hedgerows and park.
The children linked their maths learning to their litter picking, collecting the data along the way in a tally chart and presenting the data in a bar chart on arrival back to class.
In total, we filled three bin bags full of rubbish that was littering our local environment, with 692 pieces of rubbish recorded in total! While we were at the park, we hung anti-littering posters which we hope will discourage future littering in Kirkham. We will test the results of these in three weeks time, when we return to do another litter pick at the end of our ‘Environment’ topic.
