HRSE & PSHE
Intent
At The Willows Catholic Primary School, our PSHE and Relationships and Health Education curriculum supports pupils to become confident, respectful, safe and responsible members of society.
As a Catholic school, our curriculum is rooted in the belief that every person is created and loved by God and has inherent dignity and worth. We want pupils to understand themselves, develop healthy relationships with others and learn how to make informed and responsible choices.
We use Ten Ten Resources' Life to the Full programme to deliver Relationships and Health Education and Life to the Full Plus to provide our wider PSHE curriculum.
The curriculum develops pupils' understanding of relationships, physical and emotional health, personal safety, online life and living in the wider world. Pupils also develop age-appropriate understanding of money, careers, rights and responsibilities and managing change.
Learning is organised progressively so that important concepts are revisited with increasing depth as pupils mature. We want pupils to develop the knowledge, vocabulary and confidence to understand their feelings, recognise healthy and unhealthy relationships, manage risk, seek help when needed and make choices that respect both themselves and others.
Our aim is to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges they will encounter as they grow, while remaining firmly rooted in the Catholic understanding of human dignity, love and responsibility.
Implementation
Our curriculum follows Ten Ten Resources' Life to the Full and Life to the Full Plus programmes and is taught progressively from the Early Years to Year 6.
Life to the Full is structured around three recurring themes: Created and Loved by God, Created to Love Others and Created to Live in Community. These themes enable pupils to revisit important learning about themselves, relationships and their responsibilities towards others at an increasingly sophisticated level.
Teaching covers areas including physical and emotional wellbeing, friendships, family relationships, personal boundaries, online safety, keeping safe, life cycles and living in the wider world. Life to the Full Plus extends this learning through areas such as financial understanding, careers, transitions, rights and responsibilities.
Teachers establish clear links with pupils' prior learning and introduce appropriate vocabulary so that children can discuss relationships, feelings, health and safety accurately and confidently.
Lessons include discussion, stories, scenarios, reflection, questioning and age-appropriate activities. Pupils are given opportunities to consider different situations, recognise risk, think about appropriate responses and understand when and how to seek help from trusted adults.
Safeguarding is woven throughout the curriculum. Pupils progressively learn about personal boundaries, appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, online risks, harmful substances, peer pressure and how to respond when something makes them feel worried or unsafe.
Assessment is used to identify what pupils know and understand and how their knowledge develops over time. Teachers use discussion, questioning, activities and pupils' responses to identify misconceptions and areas that require further teaching.
Teaching is adapted where necessary so that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access important learning while maintaining appropriate and ambitious expectations.
We recognise parents and carers as the first educators of their children. We work in partnership with families and provide information about the content of the programme so that learning at school can be understood and supported at home.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE and Relationships and Health Education curriculum is seen in pupils' increasing knowledge, confidence and ability to make informed choices.
As pupils progress through school, they should develop an increasingly secure understanding of healthy relationships, physical and emotional wellbeing, personal safety and their responsibilities towards others.
Pupils should be able to recognise situations that may present a risk, understand appropriate personal boundaries and know when and how to seek help. They should understand the importance of trusted adults and know that they should speak out when something feels wrong, worrying or unsafe.
Pupils should develop the vocabulary and confidence to talk about their feelings, relationships and wellbeing. They should become increasingly able to manage emotions, resolve difficulties appropriately and consider how their behaviour and choices affect other people.
Through the wider PSHE curriculum, pupils should also develop age-appropriate understanding of money, work, responsibilities, change and their role within their communities.
Teachers and subject leaders evaluate pupils' learning through discussion, assessment activities, pupils' work and their ability to explain and apply what they have learned. The subject leader monitors the quality and impact of the curriculum through lesson visits, pupil discussions, scrutiny of learning and assessment information.
By the end of Year 6, our aim is for pupils to leave The Willows with the knowledge and confidence to build healthy relationships, make safe and responsible choices and approach the next stage of their lives with respect for themselves and others. They should understand their own dignity and the dignity of every person and recognise their responsibility to contribute positively to their communities.
