Welcome to Year 1!

Year 1 is an exciting step as children begin their journey through Key Stage 1. Building on everything they have learnt in Reception, we help children become more confident learners while ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for creativity, exploration and fun.

Our class teacher is Mrs Wilks, supported by Mrs Sevens. We are also fortunate to have Mrs Hayes, who leads our Forest School sessions.

Throughout the year, children develop their reading and writing through daily phonics lessons, discover new mathematical ideas and explore the world through a broad range of subjects. We encourage them to ask questions, share their ideas, persevere when something is tricky and take pride in their achievements.

Our Catholic Life

Our faith helps shape how we learn, play and treat one another. We encourage children to follow Jesus' example by being kind, forgiving, thoughtful and willing to help others.

Every Monday and Wednesday morning, we join the whole school for Celebration of the Word. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, we celebrate God's Word in our classroom. These celebrations are led by children or staff, helping everyone become more confident in joining prayers, listening to Scripture and reflecting on God's message.

Supporting Learning at Home

Reading at home is especially important in Year 1. Regular practice with reading books, phonics and tricky words helps children develop confidence and fluency. Playing simple number games and practising number facts can also make a real difference.

Little and often is the best approach. We want children to enjoy sharing their learning with you.

Things to Remember

• PE Days: Monday and Thursday

• Music with Miss Mallinson: Friday afternoon

Most importantly, we want every child to feel happy, valued and excited about coming to school. We hope you enjoy discovering what we get up to in Year 1!
