The Willows Catholic Primary School

Our Trust Our Trust

Welcome to Year 6!

The final year of primary school is a very special one, filled with opportunities, challenges and memories that will last long after children leave The Willows.

Our class teacher is Mrs Spacey, supported by Mrs Jackson and Mrs Smith. We are also fortunate to have Mrs Hayes, who leads our Forest School sessions.

As the oldest pupils in our school, Year 6 have an important responsibility to set a positive example. Through opportunities such as becoming prefects, taking on leadership roles and supporting their Reception buddies, they demonstrate the kindness, respect and responsibility that are central to our school community.

Academically, we aim to ensure that every child develops the knowledge, confidence and independence needed for a successful transition to secondary school. We have high expectations and encourage children to work hard, persevere and take pride in their achievements.

While the Key Stage 2 assessments form part of the year, they do not define it. We want children to enjoy a broad curriculum and make the most of their final year with us.

Our Catholic Life

As our oldest pupils, Year 6 have an important role in demonstrating our Catholic mission through their actions and the example they set for younger children. We encourage them to grow in faith, reflect on their choices and show leadership through service to others.

On Monday and Wednesday mornings, we join the whole school for Celebration of the Word. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, celebrations take place in class and are led by children or staff. We encourage Year 6 pupils to take greater responsibility for planning and leading prayer and liturgy, selecting Scripture and helping others to reflect thoughtfully on its meaning.

Supporting Learning at Home

Regular reading, practising spellings and maintaining a secure knowledge of times tables and number facts will help children become increasingly confident and independent learners.

Reading a wide range of books and discussing themes, characters and ideas also supports the more demanding work children undertake in Year 6.

We encourage children to take responsibility for their learning and develop the organisation and study habits that will help them as they move to secondary school.

Things to Remember

  • PE Days: Tuesday and Thursday

  • Music with Miss Mallinson: Wednesday and Friday mornings

  • Private Instrumental Lessons: Brass and string lessons take place on Tuesdays. Woodwind lessons take place on Thursdays for children receiving instrumental tuition.

Most importantly, Year 6 is about preparing children for the next exciting chapter of their lives. We want every pupil to leave The Willows with happy memories, strong friendships, a love of learning and the confidence to embrace the opportunities ahead.
