Welcome to Year 5!

In Year 5, we encourage children to aim high, develop their independence and take increasing ownership of their learning. As they move into Upper Key Stage 2, they have opportunities to develop their talents, explore new interests and become more confident in expressing their ideas.

Our class teacher is Mr Knight, supported by Mr McKeown. We are also fortunate to have Mrs Hayes, who leads our Forest School sessions.

Our curriculum offers plenty of opportunities to investigate, question, create and think deeply. Children are encouraged to apply their knowledge across different subjects, explain their reasoning and approach challenges with determination.

Beyond the classroom, we encourage children to become responsible members of our school community, showing initiative, supporting others and making positive choices.

Our Catholic Life

Our Catholic faith challenges us to think beyond ourselves and consider how our actions affect others. We encourage children to demonstrate compassion, fairness and responsibility, following Jesus' example in their everyday lives.

On Monday and Wednesday mornings, we join the whole school for Celebration of the Word. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, our celebrations take place in class, led by children or staff. In Year 5, we encourage children to become increasingly independent in planning and leading these celebrations, choosing Scripture, preparing prayers and helping others reflect on God's Word.

Supporting Learning at Home

Reading plays an important part in Year 5. We encourage children to read regularly, explore different authors and genres and discuss their opinions about books.

Continued practice of spellings and times tables also helps children become more accurate and confident in their work, particularly as they tackle more demanding mathematical problems and develop their reasoning skills.

Things to Remember

• PE Day: Monday and Thursday

• Music with Miss Mallinson: Friday morning

• Private Instrumental Lessons: Brass and string lessons take place on Tuesdays. Woodwind lessons take place on Thursdays for children receiving instrumental tuition.

We want Year 5 to be a year in which children discover new strengths, build lasting friendships and develop the confidence they need as they prepare for their final year at The Willows.
