6th March News

This week Reception have been busy looking at short and long objects in Maths. They have found lots of things to compare alongside building some fabulous towers and bridges to show their understanding. In Drawing Club we have been looking at the tale ‘The Enormous Turnip’ learning the meaning of the words; gigantic, heave, persevere and collaborating - ask the children if they can share the meaning of these words with you. In phonics we have really worked hard on the sounds ‘ai’ and ‘ee.’ The children looked fantastic in their World Book Day costumes and enjoyed taking part in lots of activities especially reading time with their buddies.

Year 1 have started a new topic in Science this week and have been on a plants and flowers scavenger hunt in the school and church grounds. In DT, we have learned how and where fruit is grown, decided which fruit we like, don’t like and which fruit we haven’t tried yet. In English, we have been learning about Imperative Verbs and how to write instructions. In Maths, we have been measuring using centimetres and 1 more/1 less on a number line to 20. We are still working on our Fundamental Movement Skills in PE and this week, we enjoyed a PE lesson outside. We enjoyed lots of World Book Day activities and everyone looked fantastic, dressed up as their favourite characters.

This week in Year 2 we have continued with our history topic “Nurturing Nurses” and have been learning about Mary Seacole. We have made some comparisons between the work of Florence Nightingale and the work of Mary Seacole. We celebrated our class Mass on Thursday and Father Andrew spoke to us about our love of reading as it coincided with World Book Day. Father Andrew spoke about reading the bible and how it is not always easy to understand. We enjoyed lots of World Book Day activities including a book hunt and quiz. At the end of the day, we had a fabulous opportunity to choose a book to take home and enjoy from the many books that had been donated.

Year 3 have had another fun-filled week! In English, we have been exploring biographies and identifying their key features. In Maths, we have been revising methods for all four operations and working hard to apply them confidently. In RE, we have been learning about the Last Supper and reflecting on the words Jesus spoke and His actions. We also visited church, where Father Andrew led us through the Stations of the Cross, helping us to walk with Jesus through His final journey. On Thursday, the children dazzled in their wonderful costumes for World Book Day and had great fun taking part in book quizzes, scavenger hunts and creating their own fabulous bookmarks.

Year 4 had an amazing day on Thursday celebrating World Book Day and we loved all the creative costumes! We spent Thursday off timetable celebrating reading, doing book hunt quizzes, writing a book review paper chain for display in the library, making our own book review chitter-chatters, creating our own top trumps and more! In English this week, we have focussed on characterisation and describing beyond appearance to attitude, actions and behaviour too using adverbs and adjectives. In Maths we have had a real focus on mental arithmetic and efficiency using mental calculation strategies like number bonds and times tables. In science we have continued learning about different types of teeth and their functions, linking this understanding to why different animals have the teeth they do based on their diet. The Easter Show is coming along nicely and we will be putting the stage up and incorporating all our props next week which is very exciting!

Year 5 started the week with a wonderful visit from Mildreth, an Anglo-Saxon from Mercia. She taught us all about her life including how her people built their houses. She brought some artefacts in and we had to guess what they were or used for. Finally, she showed us how to be fierce warriors to fend off any enemies. In English, we wrote a newsflash about dragons invading the local area then created fantasy style maps ready for our diary entries. We carried on tackling fractions, decimals and percentages in Maths as we want to become experts. RE involved us reflecting on venial and mortal sins, and we started our sewing in DT where we are using running stitch, back stitch and sewing on a button to create a map or famous building. Somehow, we also managed to fit World Book Day in where we shared favourite books, created a bookmark and did lots of quizzes!

Year 6 enjoyed a lovely World Book Day on Thursday. We spent a day off timetable and took part in a book cover scavenger hunt, made our own book character Top Trumps cards and competed in some World Book Day quizzes in our house teams. The highlight of our day though was choosing some picture books and spending time reading them to our Reception buddies. In R.E. this week we have continued looking at the events on each day of Holy Week and have focussed this week on the annointing at Bethany, the Last Supper and what happens on Maundy Thursday in modern times. In Maths we have been concentrating on area and perimeter of rectangles, parallelograms and triangles. Our English this week has had a writing focus and we have written narrative poems about The Tale of the Three Brothers.
